- Film aims to expand Cyberpunk universe

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, the best-selling sci-fi action-adventure RPG from Polish developer CD Projekt Red. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for producing the Transformers franchise, is attached as producer alongside CD Projekt Red. The film will be set in Night City, the game's fictional dystopian metropolis in California, and will explore the core narrative of V, a mercenary who receives a cybernetic biochip containing the consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rockstar and terrorist character. In the game, V must work to separate from Silverhand's overwriting consciousness while confronting the Arasaka Corporation, a powerful megacorporation that controls the city.
Keanu Reeves voiced Johnny Silverhand in the original game, though sources indicate it remains unclear whether he will reprise the role for the film adaptation. CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated: "We're excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise." No release date has been announced for the project.
The film marks Paramount's third major video game adaptation in recent years, following Street Fighter (releasing October 16, 2026) and Call of Duty (scheduled for 2028). Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million copies worldwide since its December 2020 release, with its expansion Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty adding 15 million sales. The franchise has also expanded into other media, including the Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, produced by Studio Trigger, and a second season launching later in 2026. CD Projekt Red is simultaneously developing Cyberpunk 2, a sequel with 184 people assigned to the project.
Why This Matters
Paramount's Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation signals continued studio investment in video game IP with proven sales (40+ million copies) and multimedia reach (Netflix anime, sequel in development). Casting decisions, particularly Johnny Silverhand's actor, will affect franchise continuity; production timeline aligns with Paramount's game-adaptation slate through 2028. Success or delays in this adaptation, along with concurrent Cyberpunk 2 development and Edgerunners season 2 (2026), will influence franchise momentum across film, gaming, and streaming markets.
