An online sports bettor made over $1 million by betting against Portugal in its World Cup match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday in Houston.
The user named “BreakTheBank” wagered just under $300,000 on prediction market site Polymarket that Portugal would not win the match. At the time, the odds of this outcome were listed at 23%. The bet returned $1,249,918.80, yielding a profit of more than $957,000.
Portugal, ranked No. 5 in FIFA’s rankings and a pre-tournament favorite, took an early lead but could not hold off the Congolese side, which is ranked 46th. Just before halftime, striker Yoane Wissa scored the equalizer, marking the first World Cup goal ever for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country had previously played only three World Cup matches, all in 1974, and lost each by wide margins.
Sports analysts described the Congolese performance as highly competitive, while Portugal’s star Cristiano Ronaldo contributed no shots on goal and created no chances. The result was seen as one of the early surprises of the tournament.
In contrast, another Polymarket bettor lost nearly $1 million after betting $986,388 that the two teams would combine for more than 2.5 goals in the match. That bet, which had a 55% chance of winning, would have paid out $1.78 million.
The World Cup is expected to draw record betting volume in the United States, where most of the population now has legal access to sports betting. Research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming estimates $4.4 billion will be wagered on the tournament in the U.S. alone.
Why This Matters
This result highlights how predictive markets like Polymarket can offer outsized returns when bettors correctly anticipate upsets in major sporting events. As the World Cup drives record U.S. betting volume, it signals the growing integration of decentralized prediction platforms into mainstream gambling, presenting both high-risk opportunities for traders and heightened regulatory scrutiny. The contrasting fates of two large bets on the same match illustrate the volatility and potential for massive wins or losses in this space.
