United States defender Alex Freeman scored his first World Cup goal in a memorable 2-0 victory over Australia in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, played at Lumen Field in Seattle on Friday. The goal, initially ruled out for offside, was confirmed after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, sparking jubilant scenes on the pitch.
Freeman's goal in the 43rd minute extended the U.S. lead after an own goal by Australia's Cameron Burgess earlier in the match. The 21-year-old defender reacted quickest when a shot from teammate Sergiño Dest was deflected high in the air, heading the ball home for his third international goal. The on-field offside decision was overturned after VAR showed Freeman was level with Australia's defensive line.
"At first, [the goal] was disallowed, so I was anxious when it went to VAR, but I'm happy I was able to contribute to the win," Freeman told Fox Sports. "It was so emotional for me because I think you dream of this moment and for it to finally happen with such a support system to help you celebrate it makes it so much more special."
The goal was particularly poignant for Freeman, whose father, Antonio Freeman, was a standout wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers and won Super Bowl XXXI. The younger Freeman called it a "full-circle family moment," as Lumen Field sits on the same site as the Kingdome, where Antonio Freeman had a memorable performance in 1996. "He can be great, but I can be great in my own way as well," Alex Freeman said. "It just shows how amazing it is to have a dad who's successful and that can mentor me."
The victory moved the U.S. to six points atop Group D, securing their place in the round of 32. U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino praised Freeman's development since giving him his international debut at the 2025 Gold Cup. "The evolution is massive," Pochettino said. "He's so humble... he has potential to be one of the best players in his position in the world." The U.S. will conclude group play against Turkey on June 25.
Why This Matters
This result secures the U.S. a spot in the round of 32 with a game to spare, highlighting the depth of young talent in American soccer. For readers following World Cup group standings, it signals that the U.S. can advance even without relying on top European-based stars, as a homegrown defender like Freeman steps up. The emotional family narrative also underscores how multi-sport athletic backgrounds can influence the next generation of soccer players, a trend increasingly relevant in U.S. sports culture.
