iPhone Air 2 expected spring 2027 with dual cameras, smaller notch, better battery

Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone Air 2 in the first quarter of 2027, refining rather than reinventing the slim-profile smartphone that debuted to mixed market reception. The device will retain the 6.55-inch display and ultra-thin design of its predecessor, but addresses several documented limitations through targeted upgrades.

The most significant hardware changes concern the camera system and battery. The iPhone Air 2 is rumored to feature a dual rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel main sensor paired with a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, replacing the original Air's single camera—a primary criticism of the first model. The front-facing camera is expected to remain at 18 megapixels. Battery capacity will increase from 3,149mAh to 3,500mAh (an 11% increase), combined with the new A20 Pro chipset built on TSMC's 2nm process, which sources claim could deliver up to 20% improved battery life overall. Thermal management is also reported to benefit from a vapor chamber cooling system to prevent performance throttling during demanding tasks.

Apple is redesigning the Dynamic Island to make it smaller, freeing additional screen space while maintaining the notch design. Internal TrueDepth camera components are being rearranged to accommodate the new rear camera hardware. The device will include 12GB of RAM, an aluminum frame with Ceramic Shield 2 glass protection, and Apple's next-generation C2 modem alongside Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support. The display will maintain a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness.

On design aesthetics, reports suggest a new pale lavender color option may replace the existing light blue finish, though the overall form factor remains consistent with the first-generation Air. The horizontal rear camera module will present a visually distinct design compared to its predecessor.

Pricing has not been officially confirmed, but multiple sources indicate Apple may increase the entry price by approximately $50–$100, bringing the expected starting price to between $1,049 and $1,099, compared to the original Air's $999 launch price. Earlier reports suggested a late 2026 launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, but more recent supply chain intelligence points to a spring 2027 unveiling alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models, several months after the Pro and foldable variants.
