St. Petersburg braces for rain and cooling as Scandinavian cyclone approaches

A Scandinavian cyclone is bringing rain and falling temperatures to St. Petersburg over the coming days. On September 17, mostly cloudy conditions with rain are expected throughout much of the city, with daytime temperatures reaching +15 to +17°C. Wind will be light to moderate, with atmospheric pressure around 746–752 mm Hg, slightly below normal. Meteorologist Aleksandr Kolesov noted that a warm atmospheric front is already passing through western districts of Leningrad Oblast, with precipitation beginning locally; a second front will arrive in the second half of the night, bringing rain that will persist through most of Thursday evening before clearing.

Temperatures will cool noticeably over the following days. On September 18, daytime highs will remain around +16–17°C with light drizzle and low wind speeds of approximately 1.4 m/s. Night temperatures on September 18–19 are forecast to dip to +7–10°C. By September 19, daytime conditions will warm slightly to +18°C before cooling again, with overnight lows around +9–11°C. Humidity levels will remain elevated at around 79% through the period.

Meteorologists characterize the weather as changeable, with periods of intermittent rain punctuating cloudy days. The cooler nighttime temperatures mark a continuation of what residents experienced earlier in the season—St. Petersburg recently recorded its coldest night since autumn began. Wind patterns will shift gradually from southwesterly to southerly directions as the system moves through the region.
