The Golden State Valkyries took a 1-0 series lead in the 2026 WNBA Finals with a 68-64 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Saturday at Chase Center in San Francisco. Gabby Williams scored a game-high 26 points, including six clutch free throws in the final 2:38 of the fourth quarter, as Golden State rallied from a three-point deficit with under three minutes remaining to secure the win. The Valkyries closed the game on a 7-0 run, with Williams accounting for six of those points.
Both teams are competing for their first WNBA championship. The Valkyries, an expansion franchise that began play in 2025, are in their second season and have already reached the Finals after sweeping the Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals. The Dream, making their fourth Finals appearance in franchise history, were swept in each of their previous three Finals trips. Atlanta enters Game 2 on Monday seeking to even the series after a fourth-quarter collapse in which they scored just eight points and made only two of 19 attempts from the floor.
Game 1 showcased the contrasting strengths of both teams. Atlanta led the regular season with 4,019 points scored and a +302 point differential, anchored by star players Angel Reese (14 points, 12 rebounds), Allisha Gray (19 points), and Rhyne Howard (12 points). Golden State, by contrast, built its season on defensive excellence, allowing just 3,305 points—the league's fewest—with a +310 point differential. The Valkyries held Atlanta to 4-for-25 shooting from three-point range and forced 12 turnovers that led to 17 Golden State points.
Williams noted that despite poor shooting efficiency across the team—Golden State shot 32% from the field and 21% from three—the Valkyries' defensive philosophy proved decisive. "There was a lid on that basket tonight, but that's why we rely on our defense," she said. Golden State had no other player score in double figures, and bench scoring proved critical, with the reserves contributing 20 points to Atlanta's six from the bench.
Game 2 is scheduled for Monday, October 19, at 8:00 p.m. ET at Chase Center, with coverage on USA Network, CNBC, and Peacock. The series will shift to Atlanta for Games 3 and 4 at State Farm Arena, which seats over 17,000 fans compared to the Dream's home arena Gateway Center Arena's 3,500 capacity. Golden State has compiled a 17-5 home record in the regular season and has won seven consecutive games at Chase Center, including five playoff contests.

Why This Matters
The 2026 WNBA Finals Game 1 result establishes Golden State's defensive strategy as the decisive factor in a closely contested Finals matchup. With an expansion Valkyries team (founded 2025) now holding a 1-0 series advantage against Atlanta in pursuit of the league championship, the outcome directly affects playoff momentum, Game 2 seeding advantages, and potential shifts in arena advantage (Atlanta's larger venue hosts Games 3–4). Both franchises seek their first WNBA title, making this a championship-level stakes matchup with measurable impacts on player performance records, team legacy positioning, and broadcast metrics for upcoming games.
