Palmerston North City Council is investigating the death of a family dog named Rory after he was attacked and killed on a popular riverside walkway beside the Manawatū River. The incident happened on a well-used stretch of track on the Massey University side of the river, between the Fitzherbert Bridge and the He Ara Kotahi pedestrian bridge.
Council manager environmental protection services Caleb Johnson said Rory was on a leash when he was attacked by another dog about 9.30am on Saturday. He said Rory's owner, members of the public, and staff at Massey vets tried to separate the animals and provide help, but Rory later died from his injuries.
Witnesses described the attacking dog as a pitbull-type breed with a solid build, white colouring and a dark grey patch over its right eye. They also described the owner as a white man with dark hair, around 1.75 metres tall, with a solid build and wearing a blue cap. The dog has not yet been identified.
The council says its animal management team has taken a formal statement from Rory's owner, is reviewing CCTV footage, and is checking its dog database as part of the investigation. It has asked anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
