Hundreds of Colombian fans in Los Angeles erupted in joy on June 17 as their national team secured a commanding 3-1 victory over World Cup debutants Uzbekistan, taking sole leadership of Group K in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The win marked a strong start for Colombia in its seventh World Cup appearance, following a disappointing early exit in Qatar 2022.
“Colombia dominated the match,” said Chris Gutiérrez, a Colombian from Pereira now living in Santa Clarita, California. “The important thing was that when they equalized, we were able to come back quickly and take all three points.” The match, watched by passionate supporters at venues across Los Angeles, saw Colombia open the scoring through defender Daniel Muñoz in the 40th minute before Uzbekistan levelled. Bayern Munich forward Luis Díaz then restored the lead with a goal in the 65th minute and provided an assist, while Jáminton Campaz sealed the victory with a late third goal.
Fans praised the team's resilience and the tactical midfield connection between James Rodríguez, Luis Díaz, and Richard Ríos. “The midfield link of James Rodríguez with Lucho Díaz and Richard Ríos is the best we have,” said Frank Rodríguez, manager of La Casita con Sabor Colombiano restaurant in the Pico-Union district. The win was seen as a crucial statement of intent for a team rebuilding after the disappointment of missing the 2022 tournament.
Outside the stadium, a moment of confusion arose when a Colombian fan mistook uniformed security guards for immigration agents and left abruptly without explanation. Inside, celebrations were marked by traditional music, including Juanes' “Camisa Negra” and Grupo Niche's “Cali Pachanguero,” as well as Colombian cuisine such as bandeja paisa and churrasco.
Among those enjoying the victory was the Durán family from Neiva, on holiday in Los Angeles with their two sons, both self-described football experts who predicted Colombia would reach the quarter-finals. The family planned to continue their World Cup adventure by travelling to San Diego, Las Vegas, and ultimately Miami, where they will watch Colombia face Portugal in the final group-stage match at Hard Rock Stadium.
Why This Matters
This victory positions Colombia as a strong contender in Group K, potentially advancing to the knockout stages. For diaspora communities in Los Angeles, it reinforces cultural identity and community bonding, while for investors and businesses, the surge in fan engagement could boost local hospitality and Colombian-themed venues.
