Four Russian climbers on Everest develop Khumbu cough, one evacuated
Four Russian climbers on Everest developed Khumbu cough, a high-altitude respiratory illness caused by extreme cold, low humidity, and physical exertion. One climber was evacuated early; the other three are descending in poor weather with limited access to medical care.
Quick Facts
- Began ascent of Mount Everest
- One climber developed weakness and dizziness
- Female climber evacuated by helicopter
- Three remaining climbers developed Khumbu cough by day four
- Climbers attempting descent in poor conditions

Four Russian mountaineers began their ascent of Mount Everest on October 19. One female climber developed weakness and dizziness early in the expedition and was unable to continue; she was evacuated by helicopter. The remaining three climbers continued without supplemental oxygen or guides.
By the fourth day of the climb, all three remaining team members developed symptoms consistent with Khumbu cough—a respiratory condition characterized by severe coughing, shortness of breath, and weakness. Khumbu cough is a recognized altitude-related illness that develops due to extremely low humidity, subzero temperatures, and intense physical exertion at high elevation. The condition is named after the Khumbu Valley, which leads to Everest.
The climbers are currently attempting to descend, but difficult weather conditions have blocked normal hiking routes in their area. No medical staff are nearby, and rapid medical assistance is unavailable. Extreme cold and forecast wind intensification are complicating their descent. Without timely treatment, Khumbu cough can lead to broken ribs, rib fractures, pulmonary edema, and airway ruptures.
The evacuated climber has since been transported to Saint Petersburg. The remaining three climbers continue their descent amid challenging conditions on the mountain.
Why This Matters
Four Russian climbers on Mount Everest face a high-altitude respiratory condition (Khumbu cough) that can lead to serious complications including pulmonary edema and airway ruptures without treatment. One climber has been evacuated; the remaining three are descending amid blocked routes, subzero temperatures, and wind intensification with no nearby medical support. The situation affects mountaineering operations and rescue logistics at extreme altitude.
