Japan's Mone Chiba claimed the women's title at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China with a combined score of 224.48, extending Japan's winning streak in the women's event to three consecutive Grand Prix victories this season. Chiba, 21, led after Friday's short program with 76.08 points and delivered a near-flawless free skate to 'Clair de Lune,' scoring 148.40 points in the final event on Saturday. Her victory followed wins by Japanese skaters Ami Nakai at the Grand Prix de France and Mao Shimada at Skate Canada International.
Alexandra Ignatova, competing as an Individual Neutral Athlete following Russia's ban from international figure skating competitions, narrowly missed the title. The 22-year-old, who won Olympic silver as Alexandra Trusova at the 2022 Beijing Games, scored 148.90 in the free skate—the highest of the event—but her overall total of 221.27 fell 3.21 points short of Chiba's combined score. Ignatova was making her return to the Grand Prix series after a five-year absence and had not competed internationally since before Russia's military invasion of Ukraine prompted the International Skating Union ban.
Chiba expressed relief at overcoming recent injury challenges, having sprained her right ankle in July and sat out training for approximately one month. Despite some nervousness during her performance, Chiba maintained her composure throughout and finished fourth at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and second at the 2026 world championships. South Korea's Lee Hae-in took bronze with 210.79 points overall.
In other events at the three-day tournament in Shenzhen, Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov of Russia won the pairs competition as approved neutral athletes with 209.84 points, while Britain's Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson claimed the ice dance title with 194.93 points. Japan's Yuna Nagaoka and Sumitada Moriguchi finished third in pairs with their first Grand Prix podium finish.
Why This Matters
Japan's three consecutive Grand Prix women's singles victories this season (Chiba at Cup of China, Ami Nakai at Grand Prix de France, Mao Shimada at Skate Canada International) signal a measurable shift in competitive dominance in women's figure skating ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics qualification period. Ignatova's return to international competition as a neutral athlete after a five-year absence—following Russia's International Skating Union ban connected to its military actions in Ukraine—marks a contested reintegration pathway in elite sports governance; her narrow second-place finish (3.21-point gap) demonstrates continued competitive capability despite the imposed status change.
