Wildfire Smoke Clears Ahead of 2026 World Cup Final as Thunderstorms Hit New Jersey
Heavy thunderstorms on July 18 cleared hazardous wildfire smoke from the New Jersey area just in time for the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on July 19. The smoke from over 955 active wildfires in Canada had caused unhealthy air quality in multiple U.S. states, leading to health warnings and disruptions. Despite diplomatic tensions and health concerns, the final proceeded at MetLife Stadium with improved conditions.
Quick Facts
- World Cup final held between Spain and Argentina
- Wildfire smoke from Canada affected air quality in northeastern U.S.
- Thunderstorms cleared smoke before the final
- Trump blamed Canada for smoke and threatened tariffs
- Spain practiced outdoors in hazardous air
The 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, proceeded on Sunday July 19 after a weekend of severe weather and wildfire smoke that raised health concerns for players and fans. Thunderstorms on Saturday cleared much of the hazardous smoke from Canadian wildfires that had blanketed the northeastern United States for days, improving air quality to moderate levels by kickoff.
More than 955 active wildfires were burning across Canada, with nearly 200 in Ontario alone, according to Canadian authorities. Smoke from the fires drifted southeast, triggering air quality alerts across a dozen U.S. states and forcing some sports events to be postponed or canceled. In New York, the air quality index reached 234—classified as very unhealthy—on July 16, with PM2.5 concentrations at 158.7 µg/m³, more than seven times the World Health Organization standard.
Spain held an outdoor practice on July 16 in East Hanover, New Jersey, under hazardous air conditions, drawing criticism from health experts who said athletes should not train outdoors in such pollution. "These are high-level athletes who are moving a lot of air through their lungs," said Dr. Courtney Howard, an emergency physician and Global Climate and Health Alliance official. Messages to FIFA and the Spanish Football Association about whether indoor alternatives were considered were not returned.
On Saturday July 18, heavy rain and thunderstorms triggered flash flood warnings, damaged winds and temporary suspension of Spain’s practice. The storm front swept much of the smoke out of the Northeast before the final. "It won't be dangerous anymore. It's going to be dramatically better," said Jeff Berardelli, chief meteorologist at WFLA-TV. Temperatures on Sunday were around 27°C (80°F) with light breezes and low humidity.
President Donald Trump attended the final and was scheduled to hand the trophy to the winning team. Prior to the match, Trump blamed Canada for the smoke, accusing it of "negligence" and threatening to add pollution costs to existing tariffs on Canadian goods. Canadian officials rejected the criticism. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called Trump's comments "completely unacceptable" and suggested that if the U.S. wants Canada to clear its forests, it should drop tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber.
No formal contingency plan for wildfire smoke was publicly disclosed by FIFA. Other U.S. sports leagues, including the National Women's Soccer League and Major League Baseball, implemented schedule adjustments due to the poor air quality, but the World Cup final went ahead as planned.
Why This Matters
The 2026 World Cup final proceeded as scheduled despite severe air quality risks from Canadian wildfire smoke days before. Measurable impact: New York's AQI reached 234 (very unhealthy) on July 16; PM2.5 levels exceeded WHO standards by 7×. After thunderstorms on July 18 cleared smoke, the final was held under moderate conditions. Political stakes: President Trump blamed Canada for the smoke and threatened tariff surcharges on Canadian goods; Canadian officials rejected the criticism. No formal contingency plan for smoke was disclosed by FIFA, contrasting with adjustments by other U.S. sports leagues.
