Landslide-triggered flood sweeps 65 houses in Nepal's Gorkha district
A landslide-triggered flash flood swept through Nepal's Budhi Gandaki River on Sunday, destroying at least 65 houses, multiple bridges, and damaging four hydropower projects across Gorkha and Dhading districts. Five people remained missing and 49 were rescued, with no confirmed deaths reported in preliminary assessments. The event coincided with ongoing recovery from August's catastrophic floods that killed over 1,400 people.
Quick Facts
- Landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River at Chumanubri Rural Municipality
- Blockage released, causing flash flood downstream
- At least 65 houses swept away in Gorkha and Dhading districts
- Four bridges (two motorable, two suspension) destroyed
- Four hydropower projects damaged (Budhi Gandaki, Dobhan Khola, Yaru Khola, Machha Khola)

A flash flood swept through Nepal's Budhi Gandaki River in the central Gorkha and Dhading districts on Sunday morning, destroying at least 65 houses, four bridges, and damaging multiple hydropower projects. The flood was triggered by a landslide at Chumanubri Rural Municipality in Gorkha district that temporarily blocked the river; when the blockage gave way, a torrent of water, mud, and debris rushed downstream with force. Within hours, water levels at one monitoring location rose from 2 metres to 8.5 metres, according to officials.
Authorities evacuated residents from affected villages along the river corridor following early warnings of the possible flood. By Sunday afternoon, Nepal's army had rescued 49 people using helicopters and ground troops, while five people remained reported missing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported no confirmed human deaths at the time of preliminary assessments. However, the condition of at least five herders in seasonal livestock sheds in the Wingling Khola area remained unknown.
The flood caused widespread infrastructure damage beyond residential areas. At least four hydropower projects—the Budhi Gandaki, Dobhan Khola, Yaru Khola, and Machha Khola projects—sustained damage to camps, equipment, and access infrastructure. Trekking routes in the Manaslu region were damaged, including trails between Yaru Bagar and Jagat and routes to Chum Valley, disrupting tourism access. The Sallery Hydropower Project camp was completely washed away. Two suspension bridges, including one connecting Nakchet to Philim, were swept away, alongside motorable bridges and communication towers.
The flood occurred as Nepal continued recovery from catastrophic floods and landslides in August that killed over 1,400 people and left thousands missing. The Budhi Gandaki is a tributary of the Trishuli River; the August disaster struck a different tributary of the Trishuli where glacial collapse triggered more severe flooding. Officials noted that Sunday's debris flow, while destructive, was smaller and moved more slowly than the August event. The government estimated August's reconstruction costs at $4.77 billion, affecting nearly 33,000 people and destroying approximately 7,500 homes.
Why This Matters
The flood destroyed critical infrastructure across two districts—65 residential structures, four bridges, and four hydropower projects—disrupting electricity generation, trekking tourism to the Manaslu region, and local transportation. Forty-nine people were rescued and five remain missing; authorities have not confirmed deaths but are still accounting for herders in remote seasonal camps. This occurs as Nepal is already committed to $4.77 billion in reconstruction from August's greater disaster (over 1,400 deaths), adding immediate pressure on rescue capacity and recovery budgets in the same river system.
