The PIS/Pasep was a government savings programme created between 1971 and October 5, 1988, designed to supplement income for salaried workers and public servants during that period. The programme is distinct from the current PIS/Pasep salary bonus paid today.

Payments are made exclusively through Caixa accounts. For those without an existing account, Caixa automatically opens a Social Digital Savings Account at no additional cost. Eligible recipients include workers with formal employment contracts or public servants who worked during the 1971–1988 period and have not yet withdrawn their balances, as well as heirs and dependents of deceased beneficiaries. According to the government, the average balance available per person is R$ 2,800, with amounts adjusted for inflation based on individual employment duration and historical salary.

Workers can verify available balances through the Repis Cidadão website (repiscidadao.fazenda.gov.br), the FGTS mobile application, or by visiting any Caixa branch. Reimbursement requests can be submitted via the FGTS app or at Caixa branches using an official identity document. Heirs must present additional documentation, including death pension certificates or court-authorised heir declarations signed by all eligible successors.

Payments follow a staggered calendar based on request submission date. Those requesting reimbursement by September 30 will receive funds on October 26; by October 31 on November 25; by November 30 on December 28; and by December 31 on January 2027. The final payment batch for the year is scheduled for February 2027. If not claimed within the five-year window ending December 31, 2026, unclaimed balances will be permanently transferred to Brazil's National Treasury without possibility of withdrawal.
