Ukrainian Manufacturer Fire Point Develops Starlink-Independent Strike Systems
Ukrainian arms manufacturer Fire Point stated on October 30 that it has developed technology allowing its strike systems to conduct military missions without Starlink satellite connectivity, though the alternative provides only 15–20% of full-capability operations. The announcement follows SpaceX restrictions on Starlink military access in early October and reflects broader Ukrainian efforts to reduce dependence on external satellite systems.
Quick Facts
- Fire Point developed technology for strike systems to operate without Starlink
- Systems designed with autonomous navigation independent of external signals
- SpaceX restricted Starlink connectivity for speeds above 160 km/h in early October
- FP-7 tactical ballistic missile completed first combat use
- Fire Point developing Freyja anti-ballistic missile interceptor with nine European nations

Ukrainian weapons manufacturer Fire Point announced on October 30 that it has developed technology enabling its long-range strike systems to conduct military missions without relying on SpaceX's Starlink satellite communications. CEO Iryna Terekh confirmed in a Reuters interview that the company designed its systems to complete missions autonomously, with navigation operating independently of external signals.
The announcement follows a 10-day period in early October when SpaceX restricted Starlink connectivity for Ukrainian military applications, limiting data speeds for equipment traveling faster than 160 kilometers per hour. The restrictions disrupted drone operations and strike missions before higher-speed connectivity was restored. Terekh stated that Fire Point anticipated such limitations when developing its systems, implementing redundant navigation capabilities as a priority design feature.
Terekh acknowledged significant operational trade-offs, stating that the alternative technology provides only 15–20% of the capabilities Ukraine could achieve with unrestricted Starlink access over Russian territory. She emphasized that full satellite coverage would enable high-value target strikes, particularly against Russian ballistic missile launchers. Despite these constraints, Terekh called for a predictable bilateral agreement with the United States governing satellite system access, arguing that Ukraine's defensive capabilities should not depend on rapidly changing restrictions.
Beyond satellite-independent systems, Fire Point is developing the FP-7 tactical ballistic missile, which completed its first confirmed combat use on October 1 against a target in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. The missile has an operational range of approximately 300 kilometers and could target Russian Iskander ballistic missile launchers. Terekh noted that domestic missile production eliminates the risk of foreign technological restrictions or remote disabling. The company is also coordinating with nine other European nations on the Freyja anti-ballistic missile interceptor project, with testing against a simulated target expected before the end of 2026.
Why This Matters
Ukraine's military capacity to conduct long-range strikes now carries reduced vulnerability to external satellite restrictions, but at a substantial operational cost. Fire Point's announcement follows SpaceX's October restrictions on Starlink speeds for moving military equipment, which disrupted drone and strike operations. The development of autonomous navigation affects Ukraine's ability to sustain offensive capability against Russian positions—particularly ballistic missile targets—independent of US-controlled infrastructure, while the company simultaneously pursues domestic missile production (FP-7) and multinational air defense projects (Freyja), reshaping the technical and geopolitical dependencies in Ukraine's defense posture.
