Pakistani Forces Foil Karachi Attack, Kill Militants and Vow Retaliation

Pakistani security forces thwarted a militant attack on a paramilitary Rangers installation in Karachi on Saturday night, killing between four and five attackers in an intense firefight. A militant rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the provincial headquarters of the Pakistan Rangers, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire with security personnel. The military confirmed that three Rangers personnel were killed and four others wounded in the assault, while security forces eliminated multiple attackers and captured a fourth suspect, identified as an Afghan national.

The militant group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after it occurred. The military described the group as an Indian proxy but provided no evidence to support the allegation. Following the initial assault, Pakistani security forces launched extensive clearance operations in the area, including aerial surveillance using drones to locate any remaining accomplices.

Pakistan's military warned of potential retaliation against those responsible for the attack, citing the nation's history of conducting airstrikes inside Afghanistan targeting militants linked to attacks within Pakistan. The Afghan government has repeatedly denied allegations that it permits militant groups to use its territory for cross-border attacks. President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to the slain Rangers personnel and expressed condolences to their families, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the assault and praised security forces for repelling the attackers.

The incident reflects Pakistan's ongoing struggle with militant violence targeting security forces. The country has experienced a surge in attacks against police and security personnel in recent years. Military officials indicated that operations were continuing to eliminate any remaining accomplices of the attackers and to secure the affected facility.
