Mojang has released Minecraft Java Edition 26.2, an update dubbed Chaos Cubed, introducing significant new content and features to the sandbox game. The update brings the Sulfur Caves biome, an underground environment featuring Sulfur Pools and Sulfur Springs, alongside a new mob called the Sulfur Cube that interacts dynamically with the game world.
The Sulfur Cube is a distinctive mob that spawns within the new biome and possesses a unique mechanic allowing it to absorb blocks, which grants it different properties based on the material absorbed. Wood makes the cube bouncy, ice enables faster sliding, wool reduces its weight, honeycomb creates stickiness, magma causes contact damage, and TNT grants explosive characteristics. Small Sulfur Cubes can be fed Slimeballs to grow larger, while large variants can be collected using an empty bucket. When defeated, large cubes split into two smaller versions. Players can remove absorbed blocks using shears to restore the mob to its default state.
The Sulfur Caves biome includes new block sets for both Cinnabar and Sulfur, with variants including polished blocks, bricks, slabs, stairs, walls, and chiseled versions. Potent Sulfur blocks generate within water pools and can create geysers when placed beneath water above magma or lava. Sulfur Spikes, resembling stalactites and stalagmites, naturally grow and break when struck by thrown Tridents. The update adds a new music disc titled Bounce by fingerspit and five background tracks: Shores, Memories, Nightly, Home, and Ebb.
Beyond new content, the update introduces a Friends List accessible from both the title screen and pause menu, allowing players to send and manage friend requests while viewing online status across LAN worlds, servers, Realms, and single-player sessions. The update also includes experimental Vulkan graphics support, offering players a choice between Default, Prefer Vulkan, and Prefer OpenGL rendering options, with automatic fallback to OpenGL on unsupported hardware.
Multiple bug fixes and gameplay improvements accompany the release, addressing frame-rate drops, multiplayer command handling, world upgrades, entity behaviour, visual glitches, and world border functionality. These optimizations aim to enhance overall performance and multiplayer stability across different gameplay modes.
