British tennis veteran Dan Evans has been denied a wildcard for the Wimbledon singles main draw, forcing the 36-year-old to compete in qualifying for a chance to make his final appearance at the Grand Slam. Evans, who announced last week that he would retire from professional tennis after Wimbledon, had hoped to receive one of the eight singles wildcards to secure an emotional farewell at his home tournament. However, the final remaining places were awarded to fellow Britons Harry Wendelken and Felix Gill on Wednesday.
Evans, currently ranked world number 244, has been a stalwart of British tennis. He previously reached the Wimbledon third round on three occasions and was a former British number one. In 2015, he was part of the team that secured Britain's first Davis Cup title in 79 years, and he partnered Sir Andy Murray at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite the singles disappointment, Evans has been granted a wildcard to compete in the men's doubles alongside Henry Searle, ensuring at least one more match at Wimbledon.
To enter the singles main draw, Evans must now win three matches at Wimbledon's qualifying tournament, which begins Monday at the Roehampton venue. The qualifying tournament offers 16 places in the singles draw. Evans expressed frustration over not receiving a wildcard for the HSBC Championships at Queen's Club, calling it a "classy gesture" that was denied. "I feel I've done plenty of time of helping British tennis, off the court, and on the court, so I hope to get one," he said.
The other men's wildcards were awarded to Grigor Dimitrov, Jacob Fearnley, Arthur Fery, Jack Pinnington Jones, Toby Samuel, and Stan Wawrinka. Australian Nick Kyrgios, a 2022 finalist, also missed out on a wildcard. The final wildcards were announced after 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini automatically entered the main draw when fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti withdrew due to a thigh injury that also sidelined him from the recent French Open.
In the women's singles, wildcards were issued to Maja Chwalinska, Harriet Dart, Alicia Dudeney, Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, Katie Swan, and Mimi Xu, with one wildcard yet to be announced. Wendelken, 24, impressed by beating two top-100 ranked players to qualify for the main draw at Queen's this week, while Gill, also 24, is ranked 222 in the world.
