Nigeria's STN Secures Telecom Licence to Compete with MTN, Airtel
Swift Telephone Network Limited (STN) has obtained a Unified Access Service Licence from Nigeria's Communications Commission, enabling it to provide voice, data, and mobile services nationwide starting October 1, 2026. The licence marks a major milestone for the indigenous company, which will now compete with established operators including MTN and Airtel. Industry analysts suggest STN's entry could intensify competition and potentially lower service costs for Nigerian consumers.
Quick Facts

Swift Telephone Network Limited (STN), an indigenous Nigerian telecommunications company, has been granted a Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), effective October 1, 2026. The licence authorises STN to provide voice, data, fixed-line, and mobile telecommunications services nationwide, positioning it as a new competitor in Nigeria's concentrated telecom market dominated by MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria.
STN traces its origins to 1998, when it began as a small telephone call service supporting the Nigerian University Games (NUGA). The company pioneered digital landline services in Yaba in 2003 and provided connectivity to institutions including the World Health Organisation and the Nigerian military. However, STN's operations ceased in November 2010 following infrastructure loss and boardroom challenges. The company was revived in February 2017 by Oluwole Adetuyi and Yetunde Okafor, who rebuilt the business and settled regulatory obligations, reinstating its licence in 2019. STN formally applied for the UASL on February 22, 2022.
According to STN's management, the company plans to announce strategic partnerships and national rollout plans in the coming weeks. The company's stated priorities include skills development for Nigerian engineers and digital professionals, partnerships with local service providers and vendors, expanding connectivity to bridge Nigeria's digital divide, and creating employment opportunities across the telecom value chain. Managing Director and CEO Oluwole Adetuyi described the licence as "a new chapter" representing the company's evolution and commitment to building digital infrastructure in Nigeria.
STN's entry comes as Nigeria's telecom market remains concentrated among four major operators. According to NCC industry statistics from July 2026, MTN held 51.76% of active subscriptions with 100.86 million subscribers, while Airtel commanded 34.26% with 66.76 million subscribers. Globacom accounted for 12.13% with 23.63 million subscribers, and 9mobile (now T2) held 1.85% with 3.61 million subscribers. Telecom industry analyst Adetunji Adeyanju noted that significant market opportunity remains for new entrants offering competitive services. Economist Mikail Olohuntoba suggested that STN's entry could intensify competition and potentially reduce service costs for Nigerian consumers through increased choice.
Topics
Why This Matters
STN's market entry introduces a fourth significant competitor into Nigeria's concentrated telecom sector, where MTN and Airtel currently control 86% of active subscriptions (July 2026 NCC data: 167.62 million combined of 194.86 million total). Measurable effects include potential service pricing pressure, network capacity redistribution, and sector employment expansion. Regulatory timing (October 2026 launch) and infrastructure deployment speed will determine near-term market share capture and consumer access to alternative providers in a 223-million-person market with persistent digital connectivity gaps.
