Low Pressure Area to Enhance Southwest Monsoon, Bring Rains to Parts of Philippines This Weekend

A low pressure area is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility and enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing widespread rains to Palawan, the Visayas, and Mindanao starting this weekend. PAGASA said the LPA has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours but will not directly affect the country or trigger tropical cyclone wind signals. PAGASA warned of possible flash floods and landslides in affected areas.

A low pressure area (LPA) is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and may enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing widespread rains over several parts of the country this weekend, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported on Wednesday, June 17.
PAGASA weather specialist Ms. Chenel Dominguez said the LPA has two possible scenarios. In the first scenario, it could enter the northern boundary of the PAR but not move closer to the country. In the second scenario, it may approach the PAR before recurring away. Under both scenarios, the LPA will not directly affect any part of the Philippines and is unlikely to trigger tropical cyclone wind signals.
"So, it will not have a direct effect on any part of the country and will not trigger the hoisting of any tropical cyclone wind signal," Ms. Dominguez said during PAGASA's 5 a.m. press briefing in Filipino, speaking of the first scenario. "But whatever happens, whether it enters the PAR or not, it is expected to pull and enhance the southwest monsoon," she added.
Ms. Dominguez noted that the LPA has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, with the likelihood possibly increasing in the coming days. The LPA was last located 2,900 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, based on PAGASA's 10 a.m. Tropical Cyclone Formation Outlook.
Due to the enhanced southwest monsoon, PAGASA forecasts widespread rains over Palawan, the Visayas, and Mindanao starting this weekend. The agency warned of possible flash floods and landslides in these areas.
For the next 24 hours, PAGASA expects easterlies and localized thunderstorms to be the country's prevailing weather systems. The easterlies may bring isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over Eastern Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental, while localized thunderstorms are expected over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.
