American rider Brandon McNulty, a teammate of overall race leader Tadej Pogačar, was involved in a collision with a vehicle before stage 16 of the Tour de France on Tuesday, July 21. According to Mauro Gianetti, CEO of UAE Emirates XRG, an angry motorist overtook McNulty as he traveled to the stage start near Thonon-les-Bains, France. The driver then stopped his vehicle after passing McNulty, resulting in a collision between the car and McNulty's bicycle. Gianetti characterized the incident as unpleasant but not serious, noting the driver was a member of the public unaffiliated with the race.
McNulty was unhurt in the incident and proceeded to compete in the time trial later that day. The stage 16 time trial was a technical 26.1-kilometer course along Lake Geneva near the Swiss border. Pogačar entered the stage with a commanding 5-minute lead over second-place Remco Evenepoel. The incident occurred one day after Evenepoel won stage 15, when Pogačar's main rival Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the race.
Why This Matters
A public motorist's collision with a Tour de France cyclist before competition raised questions about spectator safety at major cycling events. McNulty's participation in the time trial proceeded as scheduled, with no reported impact on his race status or Pogačar's overall lead. The incident occurred amid heightened tension in the race following Vingegaard's withdrawal, which narrowed the field of contenders.
