A 33-year-old mother was fatally stabbed in her apartment in Fukuoka City early Thursday morning while her three children were sleeping in an adjacent room. The suspect, a 36-year-old woman identified as Shiori Fujimoto, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and later confessed to the attack.
According to the Fukuoka Prefectural Police, the incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. local time on June 18, 2026, at a public housing complex in Higashi Ward. Fujimoto allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times in the neck and chest with a bladed weapon. Police found a knife believed to be the murder weapon in the bedroom.
Fujimoto herself called 110 (Japan's emergency number) and reported, "I stabbed her. We were fighting." When officers arrived, the victim was found collapsed on a bed in the bedroom and was in cardiopulmonary arrest. She was taken to a hospital but was later confirmed dead.
Investigators noted that Fujimoto had shallow cuts on her abdomen, suggesting she may have self-inflicted those wounds. Police have upgraded the charge from attempted murder to murder and are continuing their investigation.
Residents in the area reported being woken up by police sirens and ambulance sounds shortly after 3 a.m. A woman in her 60s who lives nearby said, "I was sleeping when I heard the police cars around 3 a.m. and woke up. Then an ambulance came and I was shocked." The three children, all reported to be elementary school age, were asleep in a different room at the time of the stabbing and were physically unharmed.
Fujimoto reportedly admitted to the stabbing, telling investigators, "I have no doubt that I did it. I stabbed her a lot." The relationship between the suspect and the victim is still being investigated, but authorities are treating the case as an altercation between acquaintances.
