Slovak PM Fico Claims Unique Position as Only EU Leader in Direct Contact with Putin and Zelensky

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that he is the only European Union politician maintaining direct contact with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Fico made the claim during a meeting with students, which he shared on his Facebook page on May 28, 2026.

Fico emphasised Slovakia's position on the Ukraine conflict, describing it as a blatant violation of international law. He argued that maintaining communication channels with both Russia and Ukraine is crucial, stating: "In this regard, it is even more important to communicate with the Russian side, the way we do with the Ukrainian side." This stance reflects Slovakia's diplomatic approach to the ongoing military conflict.

The Slovak premier's assertion comes amid broader discussions within EU circles about potential negotiators for talks with Russia. According to reports, possible EU representatives in such negotiations have included European Council President Antonio Costa, former Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, and ex-European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker. Russian President Putin previously indicated former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as his preferred choice for potential talks.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas as a suitable negotiator, suggesting she would face difficulties in that role. Peskov contended that Brussels was not genuinely prepared to negotiate with Russia, instead encouraging Ukraine to continue military operations. However, he characterized the EU's growing recognition that negotiations with Russia would eventually be necessary as a positive development, noting that discussions about Europe's future architecture would require European participation.
