A drone strike on Amiet Market in Abyei, a disputed border region between Sudan and South Sudan, killed at least 153 people on Monday evening, according to local officials. The attack, which struck near a fuel depot around 11:30 a.m. local time, ignited a fire that continued burning for at least two days afterward. Abyei's caretaker information minister Yohana Akol Ngor blamed Sudan's military for the strike, though the motive remained unclear. The Abyei administration stated the fuel depot supplied local businesses.
The strike occurred amid a broader wave of drone attacks across Sudan. Between Sunday and Monday, more than 300 people were reportedly killed in multiple strikes across West Kordofan and Abyei, according to the Sudan War Observatory. Additional attacks struck other locations, including a truck carrying around 200 mourners traveling to a funeral in Al-Dabab in West Kordofan, which reportedly killed 145 people, with five more killed at a funeral tent gathering. Other reported strikes hit markets in Nyala and elsewhere, with multiple sources attributing these attacks to Sudan's military.
South Sudan's Foreign Ministry summoned Sudan's ambassador to lodge a formal protest, calling the attack a threat to civilians and demanding Sudan refrain from actions endangering civilian lives. The strike heightened tensions between the two countries, which jointly administer the oil-rich Abyei region. The region's status has remained contested since a 2005 peace agreement, with the Ngok Dinka majority favoring South Sudan and Misseriya nomads favoring Sudan.
Doctors Without Borders reported treating over 20 wounded people at a local hospital, including several critical cases and patients with severe burns. The United Nations expressed alarm at the escalating drone strikes across Sudan, with UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric stating they were killing civilians, including children, and disrupting essential services. Sudan's military did not respond to requests for comment regarding the Abyei strike or other attacks.
The attacks reflect an increasing reliance on armed drones by both Sudan's military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, who have been fighting since April 2023. Despite a partial arms embargo, foreign countries have been supplying both sides with drones. The conflict has killed at least 59,000 people according to conflict monitor ACLED, with aid groups estimating higher figures, and forced more than 14 million people from their homes, creating what organizations describe as the world's largest humanitarian crisis.
Why This Matters
A drone strike killed at least 153 people in Abyei, a disputed oil-rich border region jointly administered by Sudan and South Sudan. The attack is part of a broader wave of strikes across Sudan that killed over 300 people in 48 hours, prompting South Sudan to formally protest and summon Sudan's ambassador. The escalation affects regional stability, humanitarian access, and the status of a territory whose sovereignty has remained contested since the 2005 peace agreement. Both warring parties—Sudan's military and the Rapid Support Forces—have expanded drone capabilities despite a partial arms embargo.
