Pakistan to distribute 500,000 Chromebooks to students over two years

Pakistan's new scheme aims to deliver 500,000 Chromebooks to merit-selected students over two years—compared to a prior laptop programme that took a decade to distribute 600,000 units—along with MiFi internet devices and school bags. The accelerated pace reflects government investment in digital access across schools, colleges, universities, and religious seminaries nationwide. A domestic Google Chromebook assembly line launched in 2025 supplies the devices, affecting domestic manufacturing employment and supply-chain development. The initiative targets students in all provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and is intended to expand digital skill capacity among youth regardless of family economic status.
