- Washington Sundar ruled out with hamstring injury
India has announced its 15-member Test squad for a two-match series against Sri Lanka beginning August 15 in Galle, as part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship. The squad includes the return of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has recovered from a tennis elbow injury sustained during the Indian Premier League in May, and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who will undergo a fitness test following a left knee impact injury suffered during England's ODI series in Cardiff.
Notable changes to the squad include the debut call-up of 33-year-old right-arm off-spin all-rounder Saransh Jain, who replaces Washington Sundar after Sundar sustained a hamstring injury during the England tour. Jain, a left-handed batter and experienced domestic cricketer, has taken 188 wickets across 54 first-class matches at an average of 27.3 and scored 2,223 runs at 31.75. He recently represented India A during their tour of Sri Lanka. Batsman Sai Sudharsan will also require fitness clearance before participating.
Shubman Gill will captain the side, with KL Rahul as vice-captain. The batting lineup features opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, followed by Sai Sudharsan at number three and Gill at four. Rishabh Pant resumes as first-choice wicketkeeper, backed by Dhruv Jurel. The spin attack comprises Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar (who took seven wickets on his Test debut against Afghanistan in June), and Jain. The pace unit includes Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Brar, who claimed ten wickets in India A's recent unofficial Test against Sri Lanka A.
India currently occupies fifth place in the World Test Championship standings, while Sri Lanka ranks sixth. The first Test runs from August 15–19 in Galle; the second Test is scheduled for August 23–27 in Colombo. India's last home Test series ended in a 2-0 loss to South Africa in 2025. Both Bumrah and Jadeja were rested for India's June Test against Afghanistan, which the team won but which did not count toward the WTC.

Why This Matters
India names Test squad for two-match series against Sri Lanka (Aug 15–27) as part of 2025-27 World Test Championship standings competition. Squad composition and conditional fitness clearances (Bumrah, Jadeja, Sai Sudharsan) directly affect India's WTC campaign position (currently 5th) and playing balance. Early-season performance will influence batting order effectiveness, spin-pace strategy, and India's recovery from recent home series loss to South Africa (2–0, 2025).
