Rafael Jódar and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the final of the Shanghai Masters on October 17, 2026, securing Spain's first-ever champion at the tournament. Jódar, 20, defeated fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev 6–3, 6–4 in 1 hour 44 minutes. Davidovich Fokina, 27, upset top-ranked Alexander Zverev 5–7, 6–4, 6–3 in 2 hours 2 minutes, marking only his second career victory over the German in eight meetings.
The final will be historic: it is the first all-Spanish final at Shanghai Masters since the tournament began in 1996 and became a Masters 1000 event in 2009. In 22 editions, four Spanish players had previously reached the final—Rafael Nadal (2009, 2017), David Ferrer (2011), and Roberto Bautista Agut (2016)—but all were defeated. This will be the ninth all-Spanish Masters 1000 final overall, and the first on a hard court.
Jódar's victory represents a landmark in his early career. At 20 years old, he achieved his 20th Masters 1000 win, becoming the second-youngest player to reach that milestone after Nadal, who achieved it at 19 in 2005. The win also consolidates his position in the ATP Race standings at ninth place with 3,159 points, putting him on track for qualification to the ATP Finals in Turin (November 15–22). His victory over Medvedev, the defending Shanghai champion, was notably straightforward—Jódar did not lose a set in any of his five matches this week.
Davidovich Fokina's upset of Zverev—the world number one by year-end ranking—came after he won the Chengdu title in late September and reached his second Masters 1000 final overall (his first was in Monte Carlo 2022, where he lost). The Spaniard described the Zverev win as the most important of his career. Zverev, who won seven Masters 1000 titles and had not claimed one since Paris in 2024, had dominated the head-to-head series 6–1 before this match.
The Shanghai Masters final is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 10:30 CET. Both players will compete for the first Spanish victory in tournament history and 500 ranking points. Jódar will also be 91 points away from the ATP top 10 with a strong finish.

Why This Matters
Two Spanish players will compete for the Shanghai Masters title on October 18, 2026. Jódar, ranked 13th, is on pace to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin (November 15–22) with 3,159 points in the ATP Race; a strong finish at Shanghai would place him 91 points from the ATP top 10. Davidovich Fokina, 27, is seeking his first Masters 1000 title after reaching one previous final (Monte Carlo 2022). The winner gains 500 ranking points and becomes Spain's first Shanghai champion in the tournament's 30-year Masters history. This outcome affects ATP Finals qualification cutoffs and year-end rankings.
