Uber has announced a sweeping overhaul of its premium service categories in Brazil, set to take effect on January 11, 2027, which will exclude several popular car models from the Black and Comfort tiers. The change is driven by stricter technical criteria focusing on cabin architecture, ergonomics, and acoustic insulation to meet rising user expectations for higher value.
The Uber Black list has been significantly reduced, removing models such as the Volkswagen Nivus, Renault Duster, Volkswagen Virtus, and Chevrolet Cruze. Also cut from the top tier are the Audi A3, Caoa Chery Arrizo 5, Toyota Prius, Hyundai Ioniq, Citroën C4 Lounge, and Citroën C4 Cactus. The electric BYD Dolphin received a temporary exception, allowing new registrations in Black until December 31, 2026, with existing units permitted until the end of December 2027.
The Comfort category also faces substantial cuts. Compact hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Argo, and Peugeot 208 are no longer accepted, along with discontinued or entry-level models such as the Chevrolet Prisma, Chevrolet Joy Plus, Kia Rio, and Volkswagen Voyage. Electric vehicles with compact dimensions, including the Renault Zoe, JAC iEV40, and the sedan JAC J3 Turin, are also removed from the Comfort list.
Thousands of partner drivers will be affected, as these vehicles are relegated to the standard UberX category, altering their per-kilometer profitability. The eligibility update includes revised minimum model-year requirements based on regional municipal regulations. Drivers with removed models in Black can still operate in Comfort, subject to model-year rules, while those excluded from both premium tiers will only be able to work under UberX.
The company's technical justification cites continuous monitoring of vehicle dynamics and user perception of interior finish and rear-seat legroom. Behavioral requirements for connectivity and driver service remain high; for instance, operating in the Black category demands a driver history of over 100 trips.

Why This Matters
This restructuring directly impacts thousands of ride-hailing drivers in Brazil who invested in popular models expecting to earn premium rates. It signals Uber’s shift toward enforcing higher vehicle quality standards globally, which may affect driver incomes and fleet composition. For riders, it means fewer car options in Black/Comfort but potentially higher service quality. Drivers with removed models must reassess profitability under UberX. The temporary exception for BYD Dolphin highlights Uber’s strategy to promote electric vehicles.
