Timelesz member Inomata released after assault arrest; industry withdraws support

Shuto Inomata, 25, a member of the eight-member Japanese idol group Timelesz, was released from police custody on September 25 after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting a 26-year-old acquaintance. The incident occurred on September 18 at approximately 10:30 p.m. in a convenience store parking lot in Koto ward, Tokyo, where Inomata allegedly struck the woman's face multiple times during an argument inside a parked vehicle. According to investigators, Inomata initially denied the charges, stating "my hand may have accidentally touched her," but later acknowledged responsibility. A settlement has been reached between Inomata and the victim, and prosecutors released him on "disposition pending" status, meaning he remains under investigation on a voluntary basis rather than in custody.

The entertainment industry has responded swiftly and severely to the incident. Seven companies have withdrawn advertisements featuring Inomata from their official websites. Television networks have taken editorial action: Japan Television removed footage of Inomata from a music program broadcast on September 23, and Asahi Television replaced his regular appearance on the game show "Nika Game" with an alternate program on the same date. The management company STARTO Entertainment announced on September 19 that Inomata would be placed on suspension and cease all activities pending further disciplinary decisions.

Legal analysts have weighed in on the case's likely trajectory. Masaru Wakasa, a former Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office deputy chief and former member of parliament, stated that the settlement indicates the victim does not seek prosecution. He suggested that Inomata is unlikely to face criminal charges and may instead receive prosecutorial discretion without indictment, or potentially a fine of up to approximately 200,000 yen if penalties are applied. Wakasa noted that cases involving acquaintances where settlements are reached typically result in lenient outcomes when no weapons are involved.

Inomata joined Timelesz in February 2025 following an audition called "Timelesz Project" that received 18,922 applications. Group member Daiki Shinozuka addressed the situation on TBS Radio on September 26, apologizing for the concern caused and expressing hope for the victim's recovery. He indicated that the group will communicate further decisions about Inomata once they are finalized. Industry observers predict that contract termination and group departure are likely given the severely damaged public image and withdrawal of commercial partnerships, despite the legal case remaining unresolved.
