The QS World University Rankings 2027 have placed three Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) among the world's top 200 universities, with IIT Delhi leading the country's academic institutions. IIT Delhi rose five places from last year to secure the 118th global position, followed by IIT Bombay at 134th and IIT Madras at 170th.
According to the rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds, IIT Delhi achieved an overall score of 65.7, with strong performances in Citations per Faculty (97.3) and Employer Reputation (96.9). IIT Bombay recorded the highest Employer Reputation score among Indian institutions at 97.8, while IIT Madras scored 95.3 in Citations per Faculty. The three institutes were the only Indian universities to break into the top 200.
Beyond the top tier, IIT Kharagpur ranked 205th globally, followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and IIT Kanpur, both tied at 221st. The University of Delhi led non-IIT institutions at 332nd. A total of 20 Indian universities made the global list, including Shoolini University (452nd), Anna University (470th), and Chandigarh University (526th).
Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained the number one position for the 15th consecutive year with a perfect score of 100. Imperial College London and Stanford University tied for second place. The rankings underscore the growing research impact and employer recognition of Indian institutions, even as the number of Indian universities in the top tier remains limited.
The QS World University Rankings 2027 evaluate institutions based on metrics including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty-student ratio, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, and sustainability.
Why This Matters
For students and academics considering Indian higher education, this ranking confirms a gradual improvement in research output and employer perception at the top IITs. It can guide international applicants in choosing programs with strong industry links, and signals Indian institutions' growing competitiveness, though the overall representation among global top-tier universities remains low.
