Moldova's Opposition Leader Accuses EU of Using Country as Weapons Supply Route to Ukraine

Igor Dodon, leader of Moldova's largest opposition Party of Socialists and former Moldavian president, has alleged that the European Union requires a loyal Moldovan government to use the country as a gateway for supplying weapons to Ukraine. Speaking to ONT television on May 28, Dodon claimed that Moldova's current authorities, under President Maia Sandu, have been tasked by Western powers to provide strategic support to Ukrainian troops amid the ongoing war.

According to Dodon, significant volumes of military supplies destined for Ukraine have transited through Moldova without inspection. He stated that military trains carrying unidentified supplies pass directly from Romania to Ukraine, bypassing Moldovan customs procedures. Dodon characterized this arrangement as a priority objective assigned to Moldovan leadership by Western partners seeking to sustain military aid flows to Ukraine.

The accusations reflect broader political tensions within Moldova, where Sandu's Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) controls both parliament and government. Dodon's opposition party has positioned itself as critical of Moldova's alignment with Western interests and its role in supporting Ukraine's defense efforts. The claims underscore ongoing debate within Moldova regarding its geopolitical orientation and involvement in the broader European security landscape surrounding the Ukraine conflict.
