Voting in Brazil's 2026 presidential election concluded on October 4, with polls closing at 5:00 p.m. local time. The race between incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, a 45-year-old lawyer and former senator, will proceed to a runoff on October 25 after neither candidate secured more than 50% of first-round votes.
Lula, 80, is a veteran of the Brazilian left who previously served three terms as president (2003–2010) and was credited with overseeing economic growth and poverty reduction. If elected, he cannot run again in 2030 due to term limits. Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently imprisoned serving a 27-year sentence for orchestrating a failed military coup after losing the 2022 election. Jair Bolsonaro has endorsed his son's campaign and hopes to regain freedom if his son wins.
According to partial results from overseas voting, Flávio Bolsonaro led with 49.42% of counted votes compared to Lula's 39.30%, though Lula won in 27 of 39 countries that had completed their counts. A significant portion of Flávio's overseas advantage came from Japan, where he received 25,109 votes versus Lula's 5,567. Pre-election polling indicated the two candidates were closely matched, with neither seen as a clear favorite for the October 25 runoff. Brazil's electronic voting system typically completes final tallies within hours of poll closure.
The October 25 runoff will determine Brazil's next leader, who will take office on January 5, 2027. Political analysts have identified Minas Gerais, a state of 21 million inhabitants that serves as a bellwether, as critical to the outcome. Since Brazil's return to democracy in the 1980s, no candidate has won the presidency without winning Minas Gerais.
Why This Matters
Brazil's largest democracy faces a runoff election that will determine its government through January 2027. The outcome affects policy on economic growth, inflation management, and democratic institutions. Minas Gerais, with 21 million inhabitants, is identified as a decisive swing state—historically, no presidential candidate has won without it since Brazil's return to democracy in the 1980s. The runoff occurs against a backdrop of high-stakes institutional stakes: the incumbent faces a challenger whose father is imprisoned following a conviction related to an alleged coup attempt, while pre-election polling showed the race highly competitive.
