Hospital authorities filed a medical-legal case, and a post-mortem examination was conducted at Goa Medical College.
Patekar had a distinguished career spanning nearly five decades in Hindi and Marathi cinema. He began his film career in 1978 with "Gaman" and gained widespread recognition in the 1980s with roles in films including "Pirndaa" (1989), "Krantiveer," and "Agni Sakshi." He was known for his versatility across serious, negative, comedic, and political roles. Among his notable films were "Prahar: The Final Attack" (which he also directed), "Ab Tak Chhappan," "Welcome" (2007), and "Natasamrat" (2016).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a statement mourning Patekar's death, describing him as an actor with rare intensity, individuality, and unmistakable presence who brought remarkable versatility and creativity to every role. Modi noted that Patekar was also admired for his frank and forthright views. The Maharashtra government announced that Patekar would receive a state-level government funeral as recognition of his contributions to theatre and cinema.
According to hospital sources, Patekar had messaged a close friend around 3:30 AM on October 8 to indicate he was unwell. The friend discovered the message around 4:00 AM and rushed to his residence. Patekar had seven siblings and was survived by his son Milhar Patekar, a director. He also lost an earlier son, Durvasa, who died at the age of two. His mother passed away in 2019.
