Quick Facts
- 6.1-magnitude earthquake recorded
- Tremor felt across multiple prefectures
- No tsunami warning issued
- No casualties or structural damage reported
- Japan Meteorological Agency

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean east of Japan's Kanto region on Friday, 6 November 2026, at 19:39 local time, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The epicenter was located at coordinates 35.0°N, 142.2°E at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres. The tremor reached a maximum intensity of 3 on Japan's seismic-intensity scale (shindo), where shaking is felt by many people inside buildings but typically causes no structural damage.
Shaking was felt across 18 prefectures and 537 municipalities, including Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Aomori, Iwate, Yamagata, Tochigi, Gunma, and Kanagawa. Residents in central Tokyo also felt the tremor. The JMA reported no tsunami warning and expected only minor sea-level variations along the coast with no risk of significant damage. As of publication, no casualties or structural damage had been reported.
Japan experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where approximately 20 per cent of the world's earthquakes with magnitude 6 or greater occur. The event occurred in the same region that was struck by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in August 2026, which injured at least 37 people across five prefectures.
Why This Matters
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake in the Kanto region affects transportation networks, power supply infrastructure, and business operations across 18 prefectures including Tokyo. No tsunami warning or casualties were reported, limiting immediate economic impact; however, the event follows a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in the same region in August 2026 that injured 37 people, underscoring continued seismic risk to Japan's most densely populated metropolitan area and its critical infrastructure.
