Flashscore, the live scores platform operated by Prague-based Livesport, has launched a new player rating system powered by Opta data and developed with input from former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Čech. The Flashscore Rating is a fully automated, role-based algorithmic metric designed to eliminate human bias and provide transparent, data-driven player performance assessments across more than 250 leagues worldwide.
The system evaluates players according to their specific roles on the pitch—including Goalkeeping, Defending, Progression, Playmaking, and Attacking profiles or combinations thereof—rather than applying universal metrics. The rating distills more than 70 statistics into a single grade, factoring in role-specific attributes such as duel dominance, dribbling, big chances created, and errors leading to goals. Players must be on the pitch for at least 10 minutes to receive a rating, which updates continuously throughout a match within a new Player Card interface that displays underlying factors and any applied bonuses.
Čech, who assisted in testing the algorithm, noted that the new system replaces arbitrary, opinion-based scoring with objective data. "When I played, ratings felt arbitrary. Whether it was a 6.0 or a 7.0, you never really knew what moved the needle. However, the new Flashscore rating shows the workings, and that changes everything," he said. The rating launch coincides with broader product updates timed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including Follow News notifications, an updated Momentum match dynamics visualisation, and FIFA rankings integrated into match details and team profiles.
The timing reflects intensified demand for granular player analytics across the sports data industry, with major providers competing to deepen their in-match analytical offerings ahead of football's biggest commercial event. Flashscore and its sister platforms reached 155 million monthly active users and 400 million app downloads in October 2025, with the World Cup cycle representing a commercially critical window. Čech's involvement extends beyond the rating system; he has renewed his partnership with Flashscore as a brand ambassador and is featured in Big Pete, a 12-episode interview series produced with CANAL+ that includes conversations with notable football figures such as John Terry, Robert Pirès, Ashley Cole, and former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo.
Why This Matters
This launch signals a major shift in how football analytics are commoditized and consumed. For fans, bettors, and media, transparent, role-based ratings eliminate the arbitrary nature of traditional match ratings and provide actionable, data-driven player performance insights in real time. For Flashscore, the 250+ league coverage and 2026 World Cup timing position it as a critical infrastructure player in sports data during football's most commercially important cycle. The involvement of Petr Čech—a respected former elite goalkeeper—adds credibility and signals that the industry is moving toward algorithmic objectivity as a competitive advantage.
