Emma Heming Willis Clarifies Misconception About Bruce Willis' Dementia Type

Emma Heming Willis has addressed a common misunderstanding about her husband Bruce Willis' frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis, explaining that the condition does not affect memory. Appearing on the podcast 'The Bossticks,' she clarified that FTD has three variants, and Willis' specific form impacts language rather than memory. She emphasized that the actor retains his ability to recognize his family, including his five daughters, and that FTD is distinct from Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common form of dementia overall but less prevalent in people under 60.

Heming noted that the misconception arises from the general association of dementia with memory loss. She highlighted that FTD affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, with different variants affecting language, behavior, or movement. Her comments aim to educate the public about the nuances of FTD and to distinguish it from other forms of dementia.

The Willis family first announced Bruce's diagnosis of aphasia in March 2022, leading him to step away from acting. In February 2023, they disclosed that he had been diagnosed with FTD, describing it as a “cruel disease.” At that time, the family expressed hope that media attention would increase awareness and research into the condition, which currently has no treatments.

Willis, 71, is a renowned actor known for roles in 'Die Hard' and 'The Sixth Sense.' He shares daughters Mabel and Evelyn with Heming and three older daughters—Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah—with ex-wife Demi Moore. Heming has been open about the challenges of caring for her husband as his condition progresses, and she continues to advocate for greater understanding of FTD.
