Hungary has successfully removed the phrase indicating an accelerated process for Ukraine's accession to the European Union from a joint statement by EU leaders, according to Prime Minister Peter Magyar. Speaking on his official Facebook account, Magyar revealed that the adjustment was made at the very last moment on Hungary's initiative following weeks of negotiations on the document.
"During several weeks’ work on the document, the statement was significantly adjusted to be finalized at the suggestion of Hungary," Magyar said. He added that the wording referring to speeding up Ukraine's EU accession was deleted from the text at the last moment upon his request, noting that the process "wasn't easy."
The move underscores ongoing tensions between Hungary and the broader EU over Ukraine's integration path. Budapest has consistently taken a more cautious stance on fast-tracking Kyiv's membership, citing concerns about the pace and readiness of reforms.
The announcement comes as EU leaders continue to deliberate on Ukraine's candidate status, which was granted in 2022. Hungary's intervention highlights the diplomatic maneuvering required to reach consensus among all 27 member states on sensitive geopolitical issues.
Why This Matters
This development signals that Hungary's cautious stance on Ukraine's EU membership can directly influence EU-level decisions, potentially slowing the accession process. For businesses and policymakers, it means heightened uncertainty around Ukraine's integration timeline, affecting investment planning and geopolitical risk assessments in Eastern Europe.
