Meta has announced a $900 million investment in Indian fintech startup CRED, acquiring a 20% minority stake in the company valued at $4.5 billion post-money. The strategic deal also brings CRED’s founder, Kunal Shah, into Meta’s leadership as the new global head of WhatsApp, replacing Will Cathcart, who has led the messaging platform for nearly seven years.
Cathcart will transition to a product-building role within Meta, focusing on the company’s artificial intelligence labs. Shah steps down as CRED’s CEO but retains his personal shareholding in the fintech company. Miten Sampat, previously overseeing strategy and finance at CRED, has been appointed interim CEO as the company prepares for a potential initial public offering.
Under Cathcart’s leadership, WhatsApp grew to over three billion users worldwide and introduced features such as Communities, Channels, and AI integrations. However, its digital payments service, WhatsApp Pay, has struggled to achieve the same level of adoption as competitors like PhonePe and Google Pay, particularly in India, which is WhatsApp’s largest market with approximately 500 million to 853 million users.
Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised Shah for building “one of India’s most important technology companies” and cited his “builder mentality and global perspective” as key assets to lead the world’s largest messaging app. Shah, who previously founded digital payments startup FreeCharge and has invested in over 250 companies, is expected to drive WhatsApp’s expansion into business messaging, payments, commerce, and AI-powered communications.
As part of the deal, Meta will not have access to CRED’s member data. Shah will relocate from Bengaluru, India, to Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, to assume his new role. The investment will support CRED’s growth across payments, lending, insurance, and wealth management, with the company’s board working on a longer-term management structure ahead of an eventual IPO.
