Sharp launches AQUOS R11 smartphone and wearable devices, pivoting to lifestyle brand strategy

Sharp introduced the AQUOS R11 smartphone and two wearable devices—the Karada Mate Watch and Karada Mate Ring—on June 16, coupled with a health management app. The strategy represents a pivot from traditional device manufacturing to a lifestyle brand focused on continuous health monitoring, using proprietary technology for automatic calorie measurement and comprehensive wellness tracking.

Sharp unveiled a new product ecosystem on June 16, introducing the high-end AQUOS R11 smartphone alongside its first smartwatch, the "Karada Mate Watch," and smart ring "Karada Mate Ring." The devices are designed to work together through a unified health management app called "Karada Mate," marking Sharp's strategic shift from a traditional device manufacturer to a lifestyle brand.
The AQUOS R11 faces pricing pressures reflecting broader market challenges. The 512GB model carries a direct retail price of ¥163,900, representing approximately ¥50,000 increase compared to the previous AQUOS R10 model. The smartphone will be sold through Sharp's direct channels as well as major carriers NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank. The wearable devices will be available through Sharp's direct sales site, au +1 collection, SoftBank Free Style, and major electronics retailers.
The Karada Mate Watch's defining feature is its automatic calorie measurement capability, powered by technology licensed from U.S. company HEALBE Corporation. Using bioelectrical impedance sensors, the watch detects changes in body water and glucose levels to estimate caloric intake, eliminating the need for manual food logging that typically burdens users. The device also continuously monitors hydration levels and sends alerts when water intake is needed. Priced at ¥59,400, it uses a custom "Circuit View" interface that automatically displays relevant information—sleep and weather in the morning, step count and calories during the day, and next-day schedules in the evening.
The Karada Mate Ring, priced at ¥41,800, employs sensing technology from partner SOKAI to measure heart rate, skin temperature, and sleep patterns with high precision. Weighing just 2.1-3.1 grams with dimensions of 6.7mm width and 2.8mm thickness, the ring prioritizes unobtrusiveness and can operate for up to 14 days on a single charge. Both devices are intentionally designed without payment functions, reflecting Sharp's deliberate focus on health and wellness applications.
This integrated hardware and software ecosystem represents Sharp's answer to external market pressures including yen depreciation, memory price inflation, and geopolitical uncertainties. Rather than compete solely on device specifications, Sharp is positioning itself around the philosophy "people centered, experience complete," leveraging continuous health data collection across multiple wearables to support users' daily wellness routines.
Why This Matters
Sharp's ecosystem launch signals a critical industry pivot: as traditional smartphone and electronics markets face commoditization, manufacturers are moving upstream into health and wellness data collection—a higher-margin, subscription-ready business model. For consumers, this integrated approach (phone + watch + ring + unified app) reduces friction in health tracking and creates network effects that lock users into a proprietary ecosystem. For investors and competitors, this demonstrates how legacy device makers are repositioning to compete with specialized health-tech startups and Big Tech platforms already dominant in wearables.
