The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, a 35-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, entered its second week in Plymouth Superior Court with testimony focused on her mental health treatment and graphic autopsy evidence. Clancy has admitted to strangling her three children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and 8-month-old Callan—with exercise bands on January 24, 2023, but has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges, mounting an insanity defense.
Prosecutors argue that Clancy acted intentionally and deliberately, sending her husband Patrick out on errands as a ruse to isolate the children. They contend she was not in "the throes of psychosis" when she killed her children and should be held criminally responsible. The defense does not dispute the killings but argues Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare psychiatric condition affecting her perception of reality, combined with undiagnosed bipolar disorder and problematic psychiatric medications prescribed in the months before the killings.
During the second week of testimony, the prosecution presented witnesses including friends, colleagues, the family's former nanny, a pediatrician, and medical professionals. Many witnesses described Clancy as a devoted, loving mother who appeared outwardly normal despite struggling with sleep deprivation, anxiety, and postpartum mental health issues. Forensic toxicologists testified that Clancy had benzodiazepines and several psychiatric medications in her system on the day of the killings, but no alcohol or recreational drugs. Two psychiatrists who treated Clancy in the months before the killings testified about her shifting diagnoses, multiple medication adjustments, and her statements denying suicidal or homicidal intent during their sessions.
Clancy became visibly distressed Thursday when a medical examiner testified about autopsy findings for her youngest child, Callan, while jurors viewed photographs of the infant's injuries. She sobbed uncontrollably, prompting an unscheduled court break. Earlier in the week, jurors visited the family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, where the killings occurred, viewing the basement and yard where Clancy was found after jumping from a second-story window. She remains paralyzed from the waist down as a result of that suicide attempt. Court records show Clancy's defense filed a medical malpractice lawsuit accusing healthcare providers of failing to properly diagnose and treat her condition despite her repeated attempts to seek care at psychiatric hospitals and clinics in the months preceding the killings.
If convicted of murder, Clancy faces life in prison without parole. If acquitted due to lack of criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state mental health facility for periodic review. The trial is expected to last up to eight weeks, with the prosecution potentially resting its case early the following week.
Why This Matters
A high-profile criminal trial is testing how U.S. courts weigh intentional actions against claims of severe psychiatric incapacity. The outcome affects precedent for insanity defenses in filicide cases and may influence psychiatric malpractice liability standards. Clancy faces life imprisonment without parole if convicted; acquittal would result in indefinite commitment to state mental health custody. The eight-week trial involves medical testimony about postpartum psychosis, medication protocols, and psychiatric diagnosis standards in high-risk pregnancies.
