Zaheer Khan named CSK head coach for 2027 IPL season

Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan as head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season, the franchise announced on September 21, 2026. Khan, 47, replaces Stephen Fleming, who ended his 18-year tenure with the franchise after taking up the England men's Test head coach role in July.

The appointment process was heavily influenced by former CSK captain M.S. Dhoni, who was tasked with recommending Fleming's successor. CSK Managing Director K.S. Viswanathan confirmed that Dhoni suggested Khan's name, which the ownership group—including owner Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad—accepted. Other candidates considered included former Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani, but negotiations reportedly stalled over contract length and scope. CSK insisted on a year-by-year model, while candidates sought longer-term commitments.

Khan brings IPL experience from previous roles: he served as Mumbai Indians' Director of Cricket Operations from 2018 to 2022 and was Lucknow Super Giants' mentor during the 2025 season. As a player, he took 102 wickets across 100 IPL matches and was part of India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad, accumulating 610 international wickets. CSK's ownership valued his tactical expertise, particularly his ability to analyze opposition game plans, and his experience developing fast bowlers.

The franchise faces significant pressure heading into 2027. CSK finished at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table for the first time in league history and has failed to qualify for the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. Khan's immediate priority is finalizing player retentions before the mini-auction in December, with one year remaining before the 2028 mega auction. The team aims to maximize its current squad and address gaps, particularly in bowling. Khan has requested autonomy in selecting his support staff; existing coaching staff members Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are expected to continue, while CSK seeks an overseas batting coach candidate.

In his statement, Khan said: "It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special." Gurunath highlighted Khan's "distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent," while Viswanathan noted that Khan's calm temperament aligns with CSK's team culture. Dhoni is expected to remain available as a player, though uncertainty surrounds his future as he approaches his 46th birthday.
