The 2026 PUBG MOBILE World Cup (PMWC) commenced on August 6 in Paris as part of the Esports World Cup, bringing together 32 of the world's top mobile esports teams to compete for a $3.025 million prize pool. The tournament runs through August 16 across three stages: Group Stage (August 6–9), Survival Stage (August 11–12), and Grand Finals (August 14–16).
The 32 teams are divided into two groups of 16. In the Group Stage, each team plays 12 matches; the top five finishers from each group advance directly to the Grand Finals, teams ranked 6–13 move to the Survival Stage for a second-chance competition, and the bottom three are eliminated. India is represented by GodLike Esports and Orangutan Gaming, with GodLike in Group B alongside defending champions Yangon Galacticos, Team Vitality, NS RedForce, and Wolves Esports. Orangutan competes in Group A with South Korea's DRX, Indonesia's RRQ, Brazil's FURIA, Mongolia's Aurora Gaming, Pakistan's 4Thrives Esports, and China's ThunderTalk Gaming. Turkey fields four teams: ULF Esports and S2G Esports in Group A, while Gaming Stars and IDA Esports compete in Group B.
Indian teams face distinct competitive challenges. Both GodLike and Orangutan operate primarily on BGMI, an India-specific build mandated after India's government banned PUBG MOBILE in 2020. This gap forces Indian players to practice on a different version than the global client used at international events. To prepare, both teams conducted bootcamps in Nepal for approximately 25–26 days in July to practice against international opposition on the global server. GodLike only recently rebuilt its roster following Jonathan Amaral's April 2026 departure, with the new lineup centred on IGL Manya alongside Admino, Spower, Saumay, and GodZ. This squad claimed the BMPS 2026 title just before the World Cup, securing India's largest esports prize of ₹1 crore. Orangutan qualified by ranking first in the Krafton India Esports (KIE) Rankings with 2,110 points.
India's historical performance at major PUBG MOBILE events underscores the scale of the challenge. OR Esports finished 2nd at the 2020 PUBG Mobile World League East, and GodLike placed 3rd at the 2019 PMSC—the nation's best-ever showings. More recent results are weaker: GodLike finished 13th of 16 at PMGC 2021 Grand Finals, while at PMGC 2025 Orangutan placed 35th and True Rippers 36th, both failing to reach the finals. No Indian team has won a medal at a major PUBG MOBILE international event in recent years.
The 2026 tournament format rewards survival and placement alongside eliminations. The point system awards 10 points for a victory (Chicken Dinner), then 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 points for second through sixth place, plus one point per elimination. The Grand Finals employ a "Smash Rule" requiring teams to both reach the match-point threshold and secure a final Chicken Dinner to clinch victory. With only 12 group-stage matches, early mistakes carry heavy consequences. Tournament results will influence qualification and seeding for the upcoming PUBG MOBILE Global Championship. Peak concurrent viewership reached 3.8 million during the 2025 edition.
Why This Matters
The 2026 PUBG MOBILE World Cup attracts 32 elite mobile esports teams and a $3.025 million prize pool, making it a flagship tournament for competitive mobile gaming. Indian teams GodLike Esports and Orangutan Gaming must compete on the global PUBG MOBILE client despite training primarily on BGMI (the India-specific version), a technical disadvantage that historically has limited Indian finishes at major international events. The tournament format—where only top 5 per group advance directly to Grand Finals, teams ranked 6–13 enter a Survival Stage, and bottom three are eliminated after just 12 group-stage matches—creates high stakes for early performance. Results will influence seeding and qualification for the upcoming PUBG MOBILE Global Championship, affecting roster and prize opportunities for top teams.
