Figure skater Shemi Takahashi explains decision to switch to pairs skating

Shemi Takahashi, 34, a former Japanese pairs figure skating representative, appeared on Nippon Broadcasting's programme "Osakane LUCKY 7" on June 16 to discuss the turning point in her career. Takahashi revealed that her transition to pairs skating stemmed from recognising her own lack of star quality after encountering world-class competitors in singles skating.

Takahashi explained that during a national recruitment camp for novice skaters, she encountered Mao Asada and realised the fundamental difference between them. Despite performing the same technical elements, Asada's jumps appeared to have greater potential and artistry, while Takahashi felt she was skating at her maximum capacity. As both skaters progressed, Takahashi recognised that she would not be able to surpass Asada and secure a position as the top Japanese representative in singles skating.

The decisive moment came when Takahashi met Yuzuru Hanyu, who was two years her junior and already displaying exceptional star quality. This encounter crystallised her understanding that she lacked the individual presence and charisma needed to succeed at the highest level in singles competition. Rather than continuing to compete individually, Takahashi decided that pairs skating—which would allow her to combine her abilities with a partner—offered a more promising path forward. This realisation ultimately prompted her career transition to pairs figure skating.
