Voltas, a Tata Group company, has set a new industry record by selling 1 million room air conditioners in the first 81 days of the 2026-27 financial year, surpassing its previous benchmark of 88 days in Q1FY25. The achievement underscores robust consumer demand and the company's strengthened position in India's competitive air conditioning market.
Voltas Managing Director Mukundan Menon attributed the milestone to a series of strategic initiatives, including a refreshed product portfolio with differentiated offerings across premium, mid-range, and value segments. The company also enhanced consumer engagement through marketing campaigns for its AI-enabled product range, supported by its extensive distribution and service network.
The milestone comes after a subdued 2025 for the industry, impacted by unseasonal rainfall. However, demand has rebounded sharply in 2026, driven by intense heatwaves and strategic business efforts. The Indian room air conditioner market is estimated to be between 12.5 and 14 million units annually, with players like Voltas, LG, Daikin, BlueStar, Hitachi, Panasonic, and Lloyd competing fiercely.
Industry experts note that the air conditioning sector faced multiple price hikes in 2026 due to new energy labelling norms implemented by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency from January 1, as well as rising raw material costs for copper, plastic, ocean freight, and global price pressures from the West Asia crisis. Despite these challenges, Voltas has reported strong demand across all markets and expects the momentum to continue in the coming months.
Following the announcement, Voltas shares rose sharply by 4.73% on the National Stock Exchange, trading at ₹1,407. The stock has gained about 11% over the past month. Voltas, which manufactured India's first air conditioner in 1954, previously sold 2.25 million units in FY26 and 2 million units in FY23-24, the first in the industry to reach that milestone.
