Iran Postpones Geneva Talks with US Over Israeli Military Operations in Lebanon

Iran's negotiating delegation has suspended its planned trip to Geneva for talks with the United States, citing continued Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon as a violation of an existing Iran-US memorandum of understanding. According to Lebanese media reports on June 18, the Iranian delegation had been prepared to depart for Switzerland to begin a 60-day first round of negotiations but decided to delay its departure due to escalating tensions in Lebanon.

Iranian officials warned that Israeli military operations penetrating approximately 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory breached the first clause of the Iran-US memorandum of understanding. Iranian negotiators had previously communicated to American counterparts and mediators that the Lebanon situation constitutes a core issue determining whether negotiations can proceed. Under the memorandum framework, ensuring compliance with its provisions is a precondition for pursuing final agreement negotiations.

The talks were scheduled to take place in Geneva under Pakistani mediation, with the goal of reaching a comprehensive final agreement between Iran and the United States. However, the Lebanese crisis has become a central sticking point in the negotiation process. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces will not withdraw from southern Lebanon and will maintain military presence in the southern "security zone" based on Israel's security requirements. Israel continues to conduct artillery strikes and airstrikes against targets in southern Lebanon.
