Real Madrid Defeats Sevilla 4–1 with Mbappé Double Before El Clásico

Real Madrid secured a commanding 4–1 victory over Sevilla on October 18, 2026, at the Santiago Bernabéu, extending their unbeaten Champions League record and climbing to third place in LaLiga ahead of a pivotal week that includes the first Clásico against Barcelona. Kylian Mbappé scored twice—a sensational roulette turn and finish followed by a chipped Panenka penalty—while Arda Güler opened the scoring with a curling strike and Yan Diomande sealed the win with a powerful strike from outside the box. The victory came without suspended winger Vinícius Júnior, who is serving a four-game ban for hair-pulling in a previous match.

Güler's performance was central to Real Madrid's dominance, though his opening 25 minutes included a contentious incident when he appeared to elbow Sevilla midfielder Peque. The referee did not penalize the challenge. Sevilla manager Luis García Plaza expressed frustration over officiating decisions, stating his team was "denied the chance to play a match of 11 against 10" from that moment onward. Real Madrid fans chanted against La Liga president Javier Tebas, protesting his recent comments comparing the club's criticism of referees to Nazi propaganda techniques. Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, in his early weeks with the club, fielded an unconventional lineup featuring Diomande on the left and Güler in midfield, with Federico Valverde operating across multiple positions on the right flank.

Despite Sevilla's organized resistance, Real Madrid's attacking quality proved decisive. Mbappé's first goal, described as sensational, involved a roulette maneuver that drew admiration from observers, while his second came from the penalty spot after a challenge from Andrés Castín. Sevilla managed a consolation goal through Manuel Bueno, but the momentum never shifted. The win moves Real Madrid to 15 points behind leaders Barcelona, who maintain a perfect record with nine consecutive LaLiga wins. Real Madrid will face RB Leipzig in the Champions League on October 21 before traveling to Barcelona for the Clásico on October 25.

Mourinho addressed the media after the match, acknowledging the quality of his side's performance while noting the difficulty of managing expectations at a club of Real Madrid's stature. "We are a team, and we work to improve; we've only been together for a very short time," he said, emphasizing the early stage of his tenure. The upcoming fixtures—Leipzig midweek and Barcelona at the weekend—represent a crucial test of Madrid's form and cohesion as they attempt to close the gap on Barcelona and recover from earlier defeats to Real Betis and Atlético Madrid.
