Japan's Tokachi Volcano Alert Raised to Level 2 Following Increased Activity

Japan's Meteorological Agency raised the eruption warning level for Tokachi volcano in Hokkaido from level 1 to level 2 on June 18 at 11:00 local time, citing heightened volcanic activity. The volcano, which stands at 2,077 metres and spans the municipalities of Biei, Kamifurano, and Shintoku in Hokkaido, now carries restrictions on access to the crater area.

The alert upgrade reflects concerning volcanic indicators detected since March. Monitoring has revealed deepening of the volcano's subsurface, increased sulphur dioxide gas emissions, heightened thermal activity around the 62-2 crater and Pendulum Ravine fumarole group, and increased earthquake activity. The Meteorological Agency stated that there is now a possibility of eruptions affecting an area approximately 1.5 kilometres from the crater.

Under level 2 alert status, residents and visitors are warned to avoid hazardous zones around the crater. The agency has specifically cautioned against large ballistic rocks that could be ejected during an eruption within the 1.5-kilometre radius. Downwind areas face additional risk from volcanic ash and smaller rocks carried by wind. Local authorities are directing residents to follow evacuation guidance and avoid entering restricted areas near the crater.
