A Lahore Family Court has granted a khula (judicial divorce) decree to Mahnaz Moammar Rana, officially ending her 28-year marriage to Pakistani actor Moammar Rana. The decree was issued on October 29 by Family Court Judge Zahid Bashir, following arguments presented by Mahnaz's lawyer, Barrister Khadija Siddiqui. The couple married on October 24, 1998, and have two daughters together.
In her khula petition filed on June 22, Mahnaz alleged years of physical and mental abuse, verbal abuse following alcohol consumption, and financial neglect. She claimed she had been solely responsible for household expenses and that her daughters had suffered emotional distress from witnessing abusive behaviour. She stated she could no longer continue living with her husband and sought dissolution of the marriage. The petition noted that family members had made repeated attempts to encourage reform in Moammar's behaviour, but he refused to seek treatment for addiction or cease violent outbursts.
Both parties were initially called for mediation through the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre III in Lahore. Moammar attended the mediation session, but Mahnaz refused to participate, leading the case back to court. During proceedings, Mahnaz stated: "I do not want to live with Moammar Rana under any circumstances." One of their daughters was listed as a witness in her petition.
The court decision comes after Moammar had publicly expressed hope for reconciliation in a previous interview, stating he did not want the relationship to end. In that same interview, he reportedly disclosed that he had undergone rehabilitation for alcohol addiction and acknowledged that his marriage was facing serious difficulties. The actor's prominence in Pakistan's film industry, where he gained recognition during the late 1990s and early 2000s, has drawn public attention to the case.

Why This Matters
A Pakistani Family Court's khula decree dissolves a high-profile 28-year marriage, establishing a legal precedent in Pakistan's family law jurisdiction. The case involves allegations of physical abuse, verbal abuse linked to alcohol consumption, and financial neglect—grounds recognized under Pakistani law. The ruling affects custody and property settlement procedures for the couple's two daughters and signals judicial enforcement of khula petitions when mediation fails. The decision may influence similar family dispute resolutions in Pakistan's courts, particularly regarding spousal allegations of abuse and addiction.
