Olympic gold medalist skier Bode Miller has pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor drug charges after being arrested in Idaho earlier this month. The charges stem from an incident on June 6, when authorities found a white dispensary bag containing psilocybin mushrooms in his possession. Fremont County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Hurt wrote in a probable cause statement that the bag contained 4.1 grams of the psychedelic substance. Miller, 48, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors under Idaho law.
Miller entered not guilty pleas four days after his arrest. His attorney filed an appearance on his behalf, and Miller was released after posting a $5,000 cash bond. The case remains active, and a pretrial hearing has been scheduled for July 29. Neither his attorney, Jeromy Stafford, nor his longtime representative, Lowell Taub, responded to requests for comment.
Idaho has some of the strictest drug laws in the nation, even as neighboring states like Colorado and Oregon have legalized psilocybin for therapeutic use. The substance has gained popularity among advocates who believe it can help treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD. In April, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to accelerate research and loosen restrictions on psychedelics, prompting the FDA to offer ultra-fast review for three psychedelic drugs in development.
Miller is one of the most decorated alpine skiers in American history, with six Olympic medals — including gold in the super-combined at the 2010 Vancouver Games — and 79 World Cup medals. He retired from professional skiing in 2017. His high-risk, high-reward style produced 33 World Cup race wins and two overall World Cup titles, but also led to numerous crashes throughout his career.
Why This Matters
This case highlights the clash between federal efforts to loosen psychedelic research restrictions and states like Idaho maintaining some of the strictest drug laws. For readers, it underscores how legal risks remain high for possession in certain jurisdictions, despite shifting national attitudes towards psychedelics.
