Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday hailed a newly signed peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States as a "historic document and a message from powerful Iran," emphasizing that peace will be achieved through mutual respect. The agreement, finalized by Iran, the United States, and Pakistan on Monday following weeks of negotiations, aims to end regional conflicts including the war in Lebanon. The MoU is scheduled for official signing in Switzerland on Friday.
Pezeshkian stated on social media that Iran remains committed to global peace by ensuring dignity, independence, progress, and regional cooperation. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stressed that ending the war in Lebanon is an integral part of the agreement and called on the United States and European countries to pressure Israel to cease its military actions in Lebanon. Araghchi also emphasized Iran's commitment to pursuing dialogue with neighboring states to resolve regional tensions.
The peace agreement comes after a significant escalation in hostilities between Israel and Iran earlier this year. On February 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities, prompting Iran to respond with waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli territory and U.S. military bases and assets throughout the region. The agreement represents a diplomatic shift following this period of direct military confrontation.
International parties have responded positively to the accord. Cyprus's Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos welcomed the agreement as an "important step" toward improving regional and international security and stability, and expressed satisfaction with efforts to normalize shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi separately briefed counterparts in Cyprus and Kuwait on the MoU's provisions.
Why This Matters
This agreement signals a major diplomatic breakthrough in one of the world's most volatile regions. For businesses, investors, and citizens, it could stabilize energy markets (particularly the Strait of Hormuz shipping), reduce military expenditures, and enable reconstruction in conflict zones like Lebanon. For policy makers, it demonstrates that even after direct military confrontation, sustained diplomatic channels can produce lasting frameworks for peace—a model relevant to other intractable regional disputes.
