Sanchita Ugale, a 22-year-old actress known for her role as Diya Tandon in the television serial Kumkum Bhagya, was found dead at her residence in Nalasopara East, Mumbai on June 14 in what police are investigating as an alleged suicide. According to reports, she was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in her locked bedroom using a saree. Family members rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead upon examination. The incident occurred between 7 and 7:30 PM at Sai Santoshi Building in Achole village.
Following her death, the All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) issued an open letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation. AICWA President Suresh Shyamlal Gupta stated that a thorough inquiry is necessary to establish the truth, ensure justice, and provide clarity to the public. The association emphasized that such an investigation would help address concerns and prevent similar tragic incidents in the future.
The Achole Police Station registered a case of accidental death under Section 194 of the Indian Civil Services Code (BNSS) based on a complaint from the deceased's father, Machinda Ugale. Police officials indicated they are investigating the matter to determine the reasons behind the alleged suicide. Sanchita had also appeared in other television shows including Wagle Ki Duniya.
The AICWA's appeal extends beyond this individual case, urging the Maharashtra government to examine the recurring pattern of suicide incidents within the film industry and consider implementing measures to address underlying causes. The association called for systemic attention to protect young artists in the Indian film industry, stating that Sanchita Ugale deserves justice and that the truth behind her death must come to light.
